Visiting a Patient

Visiting Hours

The health and safety of our patients, families and staff members is our top priority. Thank you for understanding that our visiting hours and guidelines are subject to change. Last updated September 20, 2024.

In continued support for our patients, Renown will allow designated patient supporters to visit their loved one during their stay. Please see below for patient supporter guidelines for Renown Regional Medical Center, Renown South Meadows Medical Center and Rehabilitation Hospital.

Visiting Hours

  • Visiting hours: 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
    • There are differences in visiting hours in the Women’s and Children’s units which will be explained on admission.
  • Patients may have visitors at the discretion of the nursing team.

General Visitor Guidelines

Respecting the Patients Space

  • Family and visitors are expected to be supportive of the healthcare environment.
  • Visitors are not allowed to share or use unoccupied patient beds.
  • To respect the dietary restrictions of all patients, visitors are not allowed to bring food or drinks to the patient unless cleared by the medical team.

Health and Safety

  • If you have cold/flu like symptoms, visitors are encouraged not to visit or will be required to wear a mask while on premises.
  • Family and visitors should always use appropriate hand hygiene and abide by all isolation and/or infection control precautions.

Photography and Privacy

  • To promote the highest level of safety and reduce the risk of falls, the care team may utilize cameras to monitor the patient’s well-being. Cameras shall not be interfered with or tampered with.
  • Visitors must refrain from taking photographs, video or audio recordings without the expressed consent of those whose image, voice, or likeness will be captured.

Prohibited Activities

  • Visitors cannot consume alcohol products, illicit drugs, or smoke on facility property. This includes the use of electronic cigarettes or other forms of inhalation of substances.

Overnight Visits

  • In special situations, an adult family member may spend the night with the patient if the patient is in a single room and the space is adequate and contributes to the well-being of the patient. The family member must be able to safely stay alone and take care of their own needs.
  • In special situations, overnight visitors of patients in semi-private rooms are at the discretion of the care team.

Children

  • Children should always be accompanied by an adult other than the patient. Visits by children younger than 12 years of age should be coordinated with the patient’s registered nurse and the patient or patient’s representative.
  • Children, ages 17 and younger, may not remain overnight in a patient room.

Special Note for Renown Children’s Hospital Visitors

  • Latex balloons are not allowed at Renown Children's Hospital, because many children have allergies to latex. Mylar balloons are allowed, and are available in our gift shops. Choose from three gifts shops, each offering a variety of children's gift items, toys and cards.

Involvement in Patient Care

  • Before or at the beginning of the visit or hospital stay, discuss with your loved one how much you should be involved in the updates with his/her hospital health care providers. Be sure to cover medication, advocacy, current condition and medical history.
  • Keep a pen and paper handy when you speak to medical professionals. Ask questions and take notes to share with your loved one. Don't hesitate to ask them to re-explain a concept or to write something down. Notes of most patient visits are available through the patient's MyChart account.
  • If your loved one needs something or feels uncomfortable, please bring it to the attention of the care team.
  • As you and your patient prepare to leave the hospital, please take time to review and understand all instructions.
  • Adhere to all patient confidentiality and medical privacy policies.
